Paul’s Bridge (first) is built.
1719
(ca.) Originally Nelson’s Bridge, it is built by John Nelson and spans the Neponset River between today’s Hyde Park and Milton at 855 Neponset Valley Parkway. The wooden bridge is rebuilt (second) in 1759, by which time it is known for Samuel Paul, whose farm was on the Hyde Park side of the river. It is rebuilt again (third) in 1807, with stone piers placed in the river, and replaced by the current bridge (fourth) in 1849.* It is rebuilt and redesigned by Arthur Shurcliff in 1935, but much of the original granite structure remains today.
